PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK (MARCH 2021)—While many upperclassmen may opt to spend their weekends out and about, Paul D. Schreiber High School juniors, Roger Carias Escobar and Elianny Tavares, decided it would be better to join peers from across New York for the 2021 Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PR/HYLI). The annual event is typically held at the Capitol Building in Albany, however, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the conference was conducted via Zoom.

Roger and Elianny were selected to represent the Long Island Delegation after participating in several leadership workshops and completing a significant number of extracurricular activities. The virtual conference was the culmination of Roger and Elianny’s hard work and dedication throughout the last several months to empower Hispanic communities across the state.

Through the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute, Roger and Elianny refined their leadership, public speaking and community advocacy skills. The two participated in the legislative process and listened to keynote speakers like Assemblyman Phil Ramos and activist Dolores Huerta. Roger and Elianny also met virtually with Port Washington’s newly elected Assemblywoman Gina Sillitti.
