PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Paul D. Schreiber High School juniors, Roger Carias Escobar and Elianny Tavares, recently joined their peers from across New York —representing Long Island — in the 2021 Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute over Zoom, Port Washington School District officials said.

Escobar and Tavares were chosen to represent the delegation after participating in several leadership workshops and completing a significant number of extracurricular activities, according to a district news release. The virtual conference was the culmination of the students “hard work and dedication throughout the last several months to empower Hispanic communities across the state,” district officials said.

Escobar and Tavares “refined their leadership, public speaking and community advocacy skills by attending the conference,” district officials said, adding, that the two took part in the legislative process and listened to keynote speakers like Assemb. Phil Ramos and activist Dolores Huerta.
