PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Repairs to a defective rail will force Long Island Rail Road commuters to take a bus or van Tuesday night and early Wednesday. Long Island Rail Road workers plan to fix a rail defect beginning overnight Tuesday, and the MTA said eastbound trains will terminate at Great Neck while westbound trains start there.

Travelers east of Great Neck should expect to see at least a half-hour of extra travel time. The work will begin Tuesday night and run through early Wednesday. The MTA said the defective rail was discovered during a track inspection.

"Thank you for your patience," the MTA said. "Full train service in both directions is expected to be restored prior to the AM rush hour on December 4."

Service will be affected as follows:

Eastbound:

  • Last eastbound train before busing begins: 8:48 p.m. out of Penn Station.
  • The 9:18 p.m., 9:48 p.m., 10:11 p.m., 10:48 p.m., 11:11 p.m., 11:54 p.m., 12:17 a.m. and 1:14 a.m. trains out of Penn Station will stop running at Great Neck. Customers continuing east will have to board a bus or van for service to Manhasset, Plandome and Port Washington.
  • Affected customers can expect up to a half-hour more of travel time.
  • The first eastbound train after busing ends will be 3:18 a.m. out of Penn Station.

Westbound:

  • The last westbound train before busing begins will be at 9:39 p.m. out of Port Washington.
  • The 10:15 p.m., 10:38 p.m., 11:38 p.m., 12:44 a.m., 2:10 a.m., and 3:23 a.m. trains out of Port Washington will begin at Great Neck.
  • Buses and vans will depart Port Washington, Plandome and Manhasset up to a half-hour earlier than scheduled train times; connect to train service at Great Neck.
  • The first westbound train after busing ends will be at 5:09 a.m. out of Port Washington.
