Manhasset Students Become Superintendent For A Day

The district was in good hands.

Students in Lisa Tran’s fifth-grade class at Shelter Rock Elementary School and Kerri Briody’s fourth-grade class at Munsey Park Elementary School recently visited the Manhasset School District’s administrative offices for a fun and informative morning with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vincent Butera and members of the central office administration and support staff.

Evangelina Vases from Mrs. Tran’s class and Luke Falco from Mrs. Briody’s class had the opportunity to serve as “Honorary Superintendent” for a day when their mothers won a silent auction sponsored by the Manhasset School Community Association at this year’s annual fall luncheon. In winning the honor, Evangelina and Luke earned the right to bring their classmates along for the trip.

Each class had their own designated morning, which began with introductions and Dr. Butera handing out honorary school district identification badges for each student. Students broke out into groups, rotating between various departments (business office, curriculum office, personnel office, transportation, etc.), and had a private meeting with Dr. Butera in which everyone received the opportunity to sit in the superintendent’s chair and strike a silly pose, as well as simulate a call on the all-important superintendent’s red hotline phone.

The visits were a tremendous success, as young students received firsthand knowledge of running a school district and a better understanding of the work behind the administrative team. In turn, central office administrators and staff were able to take a few brief moments from their hectic schedules to get better acquainted with some of Manhasset’s younger generation and see for themselves the bright future that lies ahead.
