Manorhaven Celebrates Second Year As Tree City USA
The Village invites all residents to attend a ceremony on Arbor Day, April 30.

Deputy Mayor Priscilla von Roeschlaub and the Village are very proud to have been designated a Tree City USA again. Manorhaven is one of about 3,400 communities nationwide recognized by the National Arbor Foundation for their commitment to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. This is due largely in part to the hard work of resident Pat Valente and the volunteers and Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardeners who have given their time to this important project.
In order for Manorhaven to maintain its Tree City designation, every year it must celebrate Arbor Day and promote the event in the community, educate the public about the importance of trees, maintain a tree committee and tree codes, and include tree care in its budget.
The Village is fortunate this year to be coordinating plantings of American Chestnut trees in the Manorhaven Preserve with Regional Co-Directors of the NYS Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation Frank Piccininni, Esq. and Niko Nantsis.

The American Chestnut was once one of the most prevalent trees in the forests of the northeast. Now, it is functionally extinct due to a blight fungus in the early 1900s. Piccininni and Nantsis work to establish mother orchards across Long Island to breed blight-resistant Chestnut trees. Some of these small trees will be planted in the Manorhaven Nature Preserve on Arbor Day. By working with the Foundation, Manorhaven will proudly be a part of the movement trying to bring this tree back.
Aside from the tree planting on Arbor Day, April 30, the Village is hosting a ceremony at 11:00 a.m. near the gazebo in the Nature Preserve. An Arbor Day proclamation will be read followed by light refreshments. All are welcome to attend.
