Nassau County Judge Alan Honorof, Of Port Washington, Passes Away

The licensed U.S. Coast Guard captain and U.S. Army veteran served more than 20 years on the bench.

Nassau County Court of Claims Judge Alan Honorof has passed away after serving more than 20 years on the bench, officials said Thursday.

The 68-year-old Port Washington resident passed away unexpectedly, according to Newsday.

Honorof, a licensed U.S. Coast Guard captain and U.S. Army veteran, is survived by his two children, Marshall and Lindsay.

He received his Bachelor of Arts from George Washington University for his Bachelor of Arts degree and received his J.D. degree from Temple University.

"Honorof was a principled and fair jurist who led a life of service to his country and community. From his career in the U.S. Army, to his work as a Nassau County prosecutor, and a distinguished tenure of more than 20 years on the bench, Judge Honorof worked tirelessly to advance the cause of justice," Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said in a press release. "On behalf of the Nassau County District Attorney’s office, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.”

According to his Balotpedia profile, Honorof began his law career as a Nassau County Assistant District Attorney in 1974. He worked as a sole practitioner from 1979 until he became a judge in 1996. In 1996, he joined the Court of Claims and in 2005 became an Acting Supreme Court Justice.
