Nassau Warns Against Swimming At 18 Beaches Due To Bacteria

Health officials in Nassau County on Friday warned against swimming at 18 beaches. See the full list here.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Health officials are warning against swimming at 18 beaches — 14 on the North Shore and four on the South Shore.

The Nassau County Department of Health issued a swimming advisory Friday as a precautionary measure for beaches known to be affected by stormwater runoff caused by heavy rain. Stormwater runoff can lead to elevated bacteria levels that are higher than the state's standard for bathing water quality.

The advisory will remain in effect until 7 a.m. Saturday unless more rain falls or water samples show elevated bacterial levels.
