Obituary: Salvatore Zimbardi, 74, of Port Washington

Zimbardi was a retired Port Washington Police Commissioner and ex-captain of the Protection Engine Company No. 1.


Salvatore Zimbardi, a retired Port Washington Police Commissioner and ex-captain of the Protection Engine Company No. 1, died on Tuesday at 74-years-old.

According to the Port Washington Fire Department, Zimbardi was a 54-year member of the Protection Engine Company and the Port Washington Fire Department as well as a member of the John Michael Marino Lodge #1389 Order of the Sons of Italy in America for over 38 years.

Zimbardi was heavily involved in numerous Port Washington organizations:

  • He served as Police Commissioner of the Port Washington Police District for 12 years.
  • He was a member of the Lions Club
  • He served as treasurer and member of the directors of Port Counseling Center and the Port Washington Senior Citizens
  • He was the current President of the Port Washington Exempt Firemen’s Benevolent Association
  • He was an integral part of the management and longevity of the annual Pride in Port Celebration

A viewing will be held at Fairchild Funeral Chapel, located at 1570 Northern Boulevard in Manhasset, on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

Department services will be held Friday at 8 p.m. in class A uniform.

Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday at 9:30-10:30 a.m. at St Peter of Alcantara Church, located at 1327 Port Washington Blvd.

The burial will follow the mass at the Nassau Knolls Cemetery, located at 500 Pt. Washington Blvd.
