Plandome Synagogue Uses Mets-Style Fan Cutouts To Fill Seats

Inspired by the New York Mets, a synagogue used cardboard cutouts to fill seats at a virtual service to celebrate the Jewish New Year.

PLANDOME, NY — Sports teams aren't alone in using cardboard cutouts to fill seats during the coronavirus era. Taking inspiration from the New York Mets, a Plandome synagogue celebrated the Jewish New Year over the weekend by filling seats with cutouts of congregants — and even some of their pets — to ensure its cantor wasn't alone, according to a report.

The Reconstructionist Synagogue of the North Shore ordered cutouts for its seats prior to services Friday, WPIX-TV reported. Cantor Eric Schullmiller and Musical Director Solomon Hoffman ran virtual services for the holiday which began Friday evening. Synagogue members Marvin and Barbara Schaffer told the TV station they're avid Mets fans and came up with the idea.
