Port Holiday Magic Returns With Santa, Sleighs And Specials

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Santa Claus plans to ride a firetruck into Port Washington this weekend for the annual Port Holiday Magic event, as local business leaders and organizations aim to boost small businesses on Small Business Saturday.

Saturday marks the 10th annual Small Business Saturday, where shoppers are encouraged to support small, local businesses that are part of the town's fabric and footprint, and create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods.

The Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District, the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce, Residents Forward and Landmark on Main Street plan to celebrate the day through Port Holiday Magic.

To start the celebration, kids of all ages can watch Santa arrive on a firetruck at noon. He will ride from Port Washington Boulevard to Manorhaven Boulevard. As always, stores throughout town will offer special holiday deals for shoppers. Some offers will be available throughout the holiday season, while and some stores will arrange for delivery or pick-up. A full list of stores is provided below.

Live and recorded music will play outside as shoppers stroll from store to store. A number of holiday themed backgrounds will also be available — perfect for holiday selfies — including an old-fashioned sleigh, an inflatable snowman, an inflatable tree and an inflatable Santa riding a motorcycle. The Business Improvement District has installed lit snowflakes on utility poles to add to the ambiance, and the Chamber of Commerce will adorn the Main Street lampposts with garland, lights and red bows. Stores throughout town will also participate in the Port Holiday Magic Window Decorating Contest.

All Main Street parking meters are free for the day. The Port Washington Police District will help shoppers cross major intersections.

Small Business Saturday aims to raise awareness about the role small businesses play in communities and the local economy. Shopping local helps support local merchants who appreciate the business, pay a large share of property taxes and help maintain the community's economic stability. They also offer special customer services and support donation requests from community groups, such as schools, scouts, and religious and civic institutions. For every $100 spent at local small businesses, $68 stays in the community through jobs, taxes, contributions to nonprofits and more.
