PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Port Washington's annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony is planned this weekend. Residents are invited to attend the event at Blumenfeld Family Park, next to Jeanne Rimsky Theater on Main Street.

The festive tree will be illuminated around 4:30 p.m. Sunday and the Port Washington Fire Department will be honored at the ceremony, with members activating the lights, organizers said.

The event will feature a live Nativity scene, singing from St. Peter's School chorus members, and performances from a brass band. Perhaps most importantly, Santa Claus will take time out of his busy holiday schedule to stop by and greet the many Port children on the "nice" list this year.

Hot apple cider and hot chocolate will be served, as well as a mix of donated Christmas-themed cookies. Donations will benefit the committee.

Claudia Rudegeair, a committee member for the annual tree-lighting, told Patch she expects 600 to 800 people will attend if the weather holds.
