Port Washington Concert Benefits 'Haven Houseboaters'

A night of neighbors helping neighbors.

Port Washington’s Polish American Hall rocked with good tunes and good will Feb. 27 when the community gathered for the “Help The Haven Houseboaters” fundraiser.

The houseboaters suffered damage to their homes on a wintry January morning when fire ripped through several houseboats. One couple in their 60s lost their possessions, as their houseboat sank.

But, in an effort with neighbors helping neighbors, Friday’s fundraiser raised $10,000, Dave Franklin, the event’s organizer, said.

“The people of Port Washington prove time and time again that this is a community, and not just a place to live,” Franklin said.

Friday’s benefit concert featured such performers as Alter Ego, Ricky Roche, John Ford of The Strawbs, “KILLER” Joe Ferraro, Mike Nugent, Mark Mancini, Felix Cabrera, Damon Gersh and ROCKSTEADY and special guests.

“It was so heartwarming to see so many people in town enjoying themselves while contributing to a great cause,” said Elise May, of Port Washington.

The effort is one of several in Port Washington to help the houseboaters. For example, the Lutheran Church of Our Savior is also collecting donations for those affected by the fire, Franklin said.

That kind of support is not surprising in Port Washington.
