Port Washington Under Heat Advisory As Temperatures Swell

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Parts of Long Island — including Port Washington — are under a heat advisory Tuesday and Wednesday as temperatures swell into the 90s.

The National Weather Service issues a heat advisory when the heat index, or "feels-like" temperature, is expected to reach 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days — or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.

This heat advisory applies to all of Long Island, with the exception of northeast Suffolk County, forecasters say. It will remain in effect from 11 a.m. Tuesday to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The highest temperatures and heat indices are expected between 1 and 5 p.m. each afternoon, according to National Weather Service.

Risk of Heat-Related Illness Increases

During periods of extreme heat, people should avoid strenuous activities, drink plenty of water, and wear loose-fitting and lightweight clothing.

The extreme heat affects the body's ability to regulate its internal temperature, which can be dangerous if left untreated. Illnesses associated with extreme heat include heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Officials say they are particularly concerned for children, seniors, homeless individuals, and animals.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat illness should immediately get into a cool, shady area to lower their body temperature. For severe heat illness, call 911.
