Red Cross To Install Free Smoke Alarms In Port Washington
Here's how residents can receive a free smoke alarm installation on Sunday.

American Red Cross volunteers will be in Port Washington on Sunday offering free smoke alarm installations to residents.
These smoke alarms are installed through the “Sound the Alarm, Save a Life” initiative and the Home Fire Preparedness campaign, which hopes to reduce the number of fire-related deaths and injuries by 25 percent by 2020.
Red Cross volunteers will hold a staging area at the Atlantic Hook and Ladder firehouse, located on 25 Carlton Ave., starting at 9 a.m.

The nationwide program has installed 1,136,679 alarms and saved 348 lives since it started in 2014. Over 1,700 free smoke alarms were installed in Long Island homes in the last year.
Volunteers want to help the community stay safe by reducing one home fire at a time. Anyone with a smoke alarm is reminded to test them monthly and practice an escape plan in the event of a fire. These prevention methods are critical, considering the Red Cross says residents may only have two minutes to escape if a fire starts in their home.
