Sands Pt. Home Rented By Margaret Truman Listed For $1.7 million

Douglas Elliman Real Estate placed the former summer home of Margaret Truman on the market Tuesday.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — The sprawling colonial set on a hill overlooking the bay in Sands Point where journalist Margaret Truman spent one summer on Long Island has been listed for $1.7 million.

The fact that the home once was rented by Truman is very interesting to realtor Nicole Eskanazy of Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “So many people ask me, ‘Who’s Margaret Truman?’and I say, ‘Are you serious?’” she laughed.

The former president’s daughter rented the Round Bill Lane home with her newspaperman husband, Clifton Daniel, a former editor at The New York Times, in the summer of 1958, according to newspaper clippings marking the home’s history. The 1937 home is located on a one-acre property on a tree-lined cul-de-sac, according to its listing on Zillow. The three-bedroom home has been renovated on the interior, featuring a top-of-the line designer kitchen and two-and-a-half bathrooms with radiant heat. The home, which was purchased by its current owners about 10 years ago, has been updated with a new roof, siding, electric, oil burner, patio, and landscaping. There is also enough room to add a backyard pool, Eskanazy said.

“It’s all updated and new, but [the current owners] definitely kept the old-world charm,” said Eskanazy, adding that the home has maintained features like its moldings and still stands out with the stark white color that is synonymous with the Colonial era.

The newspaper clippings serve as an added touch marking the home’s history, the current owners, who do not want to be identified, have the framed newspaper clippings from the World-Telegram linking the Truman family to the home. Margaret Truman was visited by her father, President Harry S. Truman and her mother, First Lady Bess Truman, according to the articles, both society reports common for the era of the 50s, that noted the Trumans had just returned from a Mediterranean cruise and stopped off on Long Island before catching a train back to Missouri.

“It’s a great house,” Eskanazy said.

The home, which has a fireplace, entertainment area, and a patio, will be featured in an open house by Douglas Elliman Real Estate this Sunday between 12 and 1:30 p.m.
