Schreiber Gets to Business

Port Washington Virtual Enterprise Students Ranked in Top 150 in the Nation

PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK (FEBRUARY 2021)—While most high school students make their studies a top order of business, the upperclassmen at Paul D. Schreiber High School make business their top priority, literally. Through the district’s Virtual Enterprise (VE) course, Port Washington students have the opportunity to discover their entrepreneurship skills while participating in a virtual bank, simulating a real bank environment, all while sitting in the classroom.

“I’m extremely proud of these students who are capitalizing on an educational opportunity that truly transforms a classroom environment into a professional work environment,” said Dr. Michael Hynes, superintendent of Port Washington Union Free School District. “With Jennifer’s help, our virtual enterprise students are becoming independent-thinking business professionals, enhancing their college readiness and career preparation. Everything they’ve accomplished thus far, regionally and nationally, is very well earned.”

Despite the challenges that the 2020-2021 school year has presented, students in Mrs. Jennifer Herber’s VE class—teamed to create two firms: Allergy Alligator and Temp-a-ware— used their business sense to earn national recognition. Allergy Alligator and Temp-a-ware were ranked among the top 150 firms out of 500 that participated. While overseeing their virtual firms and conducting business with others, nationally and internationally, Port’s students have become knowledgeable on how to manage cash flow, lines of credit, payroll and several additional banking aspects to effectively operate a business. Most recently, Schreiber was ranked among the Top 10 in the United States in the Design for Delight Competition, a live Zoom presentation competition where students described the product development process of their firm.
