Tornado Warning Expires For Parts Of LI, NYC, Hudson Valley
A thunderstorm rumbled through Long Island, New York City and the Hudson Valley on Tuesday afternoon, prompting a tornado warning.
LONG ISLAND, NY — A strong thunderstorm rumbled through southeastern New York on Tuesday afternoon, bringing heavy rains, booming thunder and blustery winds. It forced weather forecasters to issue a tornado warning for parts of Long Island, the Hudson Valley and New York City.
The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and said it would remain in effect until 3 p.m. for southern Westchester County, the Bronx, Manhattan and northwestern Nassau County, including Port Washington and Glen Cove.
"At 233 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over East Tremont, moving east at 50 mph," the weather service alert said, noting that radar showed rotation.

"Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter," the weather service said. "Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely."
The storm was near Sands Point and Port Washington around 2:45 p.m., the weather service said, reaching Glen Cove around 2:50 p.m.

"Heavy rainfall may hide this tornado," the agency said. "Do not wait to see or hear the tornado. TAKE COVER NOW!"
Penny-sized hail was also possible.
