Veterans May Be Able To Adopt Dogs Fee-Free In Port Washington

In honor of National "Make a Dog's Day," North Hempstead officials proposed waiving adoption fees for vets at the town's animal shelter.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Veterans may soon be able to adopt dogs for free in Port Washington.

Judi Bosworth, the North Hempstead town supervisor, and the town board have proposed waiving adoption fees for veterans at the town's animal shelter on Marino Avenue.

Board members will vote Thursday on whether to pass the measure. If approved, veterans will be able to adopt dogs fee-free beginning Nov. 1. Adoption rules still apply and anyone looking to use the waiver will have to be a qualified U.S. veteran. They'll be asked to show their Nassau County veterans card, form DD214 or their U.S. Military ID.

Adoption fees for dogs are typically $57. That includes a dog license, vaccinations, spaying and neutering and a microchip.

"Our veterans have sacrificed so much for our safety and Democracy and this is a small 'thank you' to them,' Bosworth said in a news release. "The dogs at our Town Shelter are waiting for a forever home and I hope that a veteran will make one of them part of their family."
