Car Crashes Into Riverhead Home, Bursts Into Flames

The car became airborne before slamming into the house, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — One person was airlifted and two others were injured after a car slammed into a home on West Main Street in Riverhead Wednesday, police said.

According to the Riverhead Police Department, the crash took place at 1:11 p.m.; officers arrived at the scene to find a 1993 Ford pickup on fire and almost completely embedded in the front of the home.

The driver of the pickup, heading west on West Main Street, left the roadway, hitting an embankment, becoming airborne, and striking the front of the home, police said.

The driver appeared to have undergone a medical event, causing him to lose control of the vehicle, police said.

An occupant within the residence who had reportedly just exited the kitchen area — the main area affected by the collision — just as the vehicle came into contact with the exterior of the house, escaped serious injuries, police said. The occupants of the home were able to get out with minor injuries, police said.

The occupants of the pickup truck were trapped inside the vehicle and extricated by the Riverhead Fire Department; the fire was extinguished, police said.

One of the residents was treated at the scene by personnel from Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance and transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center with minor injuries; the operator of the vehicle was treated at the scene by members of Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance and transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for further treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The passenger in the vehicle was also treated at the scene by personnel from Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance and was flown to Stonybrook University Hospital by Suffolk County Police aviation for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
