DEC Agrees to Monitor Speonk Plume

After hearing from 100 residents, officials and environmentalists at a meeting on Thursday evening on a toxic plume that runs under Speonk, the Department of Environmental Conservation has agreed to re-classify the plume, allowing for monitoring to take place.

Trustee: 'We’ve Got to Fortify Our Beaches'

“I am alarmed as the dickens,” Southampton Village Trustee Bill Hattrick told Patch Friday, as he described his concern over the devastation another hurricane could bring to the village's oceanfront homes if preventive measures are not taken.

“I don’t want to wake up one day and 25 mansions are gone," Hattrick said. "That will be terrible for the whole community and our real estate world will collapse.”

The village's shoreline took a beating during Superstorm Sandy in areas such as Little Plains, Wyandanch and in front of theSouthampton Bathing Corporation, he said. He advised people take a look for themselves. “It’s unbelievable what you will see.”

EAST HAMPTON

Vito Sisti, a well-known figure around Springs, died suddenly on Monday of causes as yet to be determined. He was 51.

Born in Brooklyn on Sept. 14, 1961, Sisti was the son of Francisco Sisti, who died last year, and Marie Ali Sisti, who survives her son and lives on Staten Island, NY.

After attending schools on Staten Island, where he grew up, and a stint at Wagner College, Sisti joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served on the U.S.S. Midget stationed in Alameda, Calif., and traveling to Alaska and back.When he asked for a transfer to the East Coast, Sisti ended up in Montauk in the mid-80s, and dropped anchor in Springs.

North Fork Animal Welfare League's First Day At Riverhead Animal Shelter

After months of antipation, Friday marked the day when the North Fork Animal Welfare League commence privatization of the Riverhead animal shelter on Youngs Avenue.

In the days before the move, a new Facebook page, "North Fork Animal Welfare League/Riverhead Animal Shelter" announced that donations for the animals are needed, including blankets, sheets, and towels. Donations can be brought to the facilty at 532 Youngs Avenue beginning Friday, the page said.

Peconic Teen Missing; Cops Search Throughout Week

Since Peconic teen Ashley Murray went missing Monday, the Southold Town police have launched an extensive investigation that has covered over 25 geographical areas and included over 30 individuals so far.

On Friday, Southold police issued an update in the form of a release, detailing investigation efforts.

Police said since receiving a report on Monday morning that Ashley did not arrive at Southold High School, after the department's initial response to her home, it became "evident that Ashley was truly missing and may have left her home with intentions of harming herself."
