Long Island Weather: Storm to Bring Snow, Ice, 45 MPH Winds

Everything you need to know about what promises to be a wintry mess this weekend.

With a weekend winter storm on the way, snow total estimates have fallen for Long Island. Much of the island will likely only see 1-3 inches of snow, but the storm will be packing much more than just snow.

Wind gusts up to 45 mph Sunday afternoon into Monday could bring down tree limbs and power lines, the National Weather Service says. There's also the potential for a flash freeze Sunday afternoon when temperatures plunge into the 20s.

Snow is expected to begin Saturday evening. It will likely mix with rain for a few hours Saturday night before turning to all rain early Sunday. Things will get dicey come Sunday afternoon when we could be looking at mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

If a flash freeze does occur Sunday, it will create a sheet of ice on any untreated surfaces, the NWS says. Black ice may also be an issue for the Monday morning commute.
