Three hundred and fifteen seniors walk across the aisle, receive their diplomas.

"Life doesn't stop for anyone. If you don't stop and take and take a look around every once in a while, you might miss it."

The words of one of the most famous high school characters in recent memory – Ferris Bueller – were used on Saturday to inspire 315 Riverhead High School graduates. Class president Joe Piro was one of several speakers to offer advice to the crowd, which received their diplomas on McKillop Football Field.

Spiro, class Treasurer Christina Sacchitello, Vice President Christy Brewer, Student Government President Nicole Mauro, Salutatorian Daniel Tsyz, Valedictorian Daniel Raynor, and High School Principal David Wicks all offered a few words.

Superintendent Nancy Carney urged the students to serve the public in one form or another after graduating – from being a police officer, teaching, donating their time to their community, or otherwise.

"We certainly have our problems, but our democracy is strong  and will continue to thrive. It thrives because of people who give up themselves to make it a better place," she said.
