Riverhead High School Honors Student Wrestler

Congratulations to Ed Matyka for all his accomplishments.

Riverhead High School wrestler Ed Matyka was recently honored after breaking the 100th win mark, becoming the Suffolk County Wrestling Champ, placing fourth at the New York State Championships and placing fifth at the Nationals earning the title of All American, which is attributed to the top eight wrestlers at this event.

At the Suffolk County League IV Championships Matyka overcame a 5-0 deficit in the final half-minute of the third period and won his first county title in triple overtime at the Suffolk County Championships at Hofstra.

He was also named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler.

At the New York State Championships, Riverhead sent Matyka as their one wrestler to the New York State meet, who wrestles at 120.

He then wrestled in the consolation finals for third place and for his 100th career win.

He scored a reversal to tie the match at four and then scored two more late in the period to win.

Matyka dominated the third period to earn his 99th career win and fourth straight win at the state tournament after falling in the first round.

He came in fourth in the New York State Meet Wrestling Nationals – All American

During the weekend of March 27-28, Matyka traveled to Virginia Beach for the Nationals.

The first eight wrestlers place and become All-American.

He is the first All American in the history of wrestling at Riverhead High School.
