RIVERHEAD, NY — Young mathletes from Riverhead have made their hometown proud recently, taking home the state title.

Riley Avenue Elementary School mathletes Nolan Bruen, Alexandria Governali, Kaelyn Kistinger, Julia Pelis and Ryan Quick won the New York State District 5 champion title after competing in the Mathleague.org state tournament on May 8 for three-and-a-half hours via Zoom from their homes, the district said.

They advanced to the state level following a regional competition on Feb. 20, in which they concentrated on four timed rounds: the Sprint, Number Sense, Target, and Team. And, following the May 8 win, the children earned a spot in the national tournament, which will be held June 19, the district said.
