Wrong-Way Driver Charged With DWI On Highway: Police

The woman was charged with DWI after she drove the wrong way on the Sunrise Highway, police say.

WADING RIVER, NY— A Wading River woman was charged with driving while intoxicated after she drove the wrong way on the Sunrise Highway early Sunday, police said.

According to Suffolk County Police, the incident took place at 1:40 a.m.; Maria Latora, 26, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane of Sunrise Highway near exit 44 in Islip, police said.

Latora was arrested and charged with DWI, police said.

Patrol officers saw a 2017 Honda Accord traveling in the wrong direction and when they tried to pull her over, Latora failed to stop and continued driving east, police said.

Officers then closed the eastbound lanes of Sunrise Highway at Exit 50; when the Honda reached Exit 50, the driver made a U-turn and began traveling west, police said.

Latora then stopped for a highway patrol officer in the westbound lane of Sunrise Highway Service Road between Exit 50 and Exit 50A, police said.

Latora was held overnight at the fourth precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday, police said.
