Dobbs Ferry Senior Makes It to National Merit Finals
Rebecca Wiersma is among 15,000 students of 1.5 million to be named as a finalist for the prestigious award.

Congratulations to Dobbs Ferry High School senior Rebecca Wiersma who was recently named a Finalist in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.
She is among 15,000 Finalists, out of 1.5 million students nationwide entered in the program, to qualify for this distinction. Some 8,300 winners will be selected from this Finalist group and receive Merit Scholarship offers, which will be announced beginning in April.
Rebecca Wiersma is an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma candidate and member of the National Honor Society and French Honor Society. At Dobbs Ferry High School she is co-editor of the school newspaper, the Eagle Echo, and writes for Orpheus, the literary magazine. Rebecca has been the President of the Sign language Club since ninth grade.

An avid runner, Rebecca is the captain of the Varsity Cross-Country Team and runs both indoor and outdoor track during the year. Her specialty is the two-mile distance race. Outside of school Rebecca has been studying the piano since she was five-years-old and is a talented musician.
For the past three years, Rebecca has been involved in Dobbs Ferry High School’s Science Research Program and is very interested in the field of genetics. Her research project is focused on finding a treatment or cure for Noonan syndrome http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/noonan-syndrome/DS00857, a genetic disorder that can lead to heart disease and increased risk of developing Leukemia.

Rebecca wants to possibly major in biology in college, while continuing to pursue her French studies.
