Increased Terrorism Patrols Over Memorial Day

Operation Safeguard and local law enforcement don’t want you to forget about the ongoing threat of terrorism and the danger it poses to individuals and businesses that can be unknowingly targeted by those who want to harm American citizens, especially during the holidays.

“During the upcoming Memorial Day Observance period, we need to remember the recent events that occurred during the Boston Marathon are unfortunately a sad reminder that we still need to remain vigilant and diligent in our duties—never forgetting that terrorism, foreign and domestic, is a part of today’s world,” said Irvington Chief of Police Michael Cerone, who serves as the chairman of Counter Terrorism Zone 3 (CTZ-3).

As a part of Operation Safeguard, local police will conduct a “holiday tasking” starting Friday in Counter Terrorism Zone 3 (CTZ-3), which includes Westchester and Putnam counties where local law enforcement work together to collect and analyze information that prevents terrorism.

“A factor in our daily lives today," said Cerone. "The Boston Marathon is proof enough that terrorism can reach many venues in America.”

Visibility patrols will be increased in CTZ-3 and local law enforcement will conduct inspections and security checks of public places—like train stations, commuter parking lots, bus routes, shopping malls and public parks—where holiday events may occur during the “holiday tasking” from Friday, May 24 to Tuesday, May 28.

“This increased uniformed presence is NOT because there is a renewed threat to your safety,” said Cerone. “It is simply part of our counter-terrorism strategy of continued vigilance.

Police are reminding residents that “preventing crime is everybody’s business and “If you see something, say something!”

"With each day we learn of new tools and tactics that individuals who intend to impair our way of life may use to advance their plans. As you celebrate the holidays, be mindful of behavior that does not match the usual pattern of activity found within our daily lives," said Cerone.

If you do observe suspicious activity remember:

  • Do not confront the individual
  • Do no reveal your suspicions to the individual
  • Record as many details as possible
  • Notify police by calling 911 or the Safe New York State tipline at 1-886-SAFE-NYS or 1-866-723-3697

Operation Safeguard was started in 2004, the vice chairs for the CTZ-3 committee include Rye Brook Police Chief Gregory Austin, Bedford Police Chief William Hayes, Dobbs Ferry Police Chief Betsy Gelardi and Mount Vernon Police Chief John Roland.
