Playland Opens for 85th Season After Sandy

The Westchester amusement park celebrated its grand opening Saturday after it suffered much damage from the hurricane.

Not even a hurricane or threats of thunderstorms could halt the smiles, frivolity and fun Westchester County’s Playland Park has to offer. The park held its grand opening under a grey sky Saturday, after sustaining much damage during Hurricane Sandy in October. Playland kicked off its 85th season with a parade led by Coaster the Dragon, Playland's mascot; County Executive Rob Astorino; Miss Westchester Teen 2013 Brittany Smith; and the Port Chester High School Marching Band. After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, park-goers raced to get on their favorite rides, play some games and enjoy some carnival snacks. The Rye amusement park was first opened in 1928 and features more than 50 adult and children’s rides, miniature golf, musical performances and entertainment, and public picnicking. The park’s beach and pool open in late June, while fireworks shows start in July. Admission to all the park’s rides is $30 for adults and $20 for those under 48”, while children under 2 ride for free. Westchester residents get a $5 discount. If you aren’t much of a ride person and just want to hang out at the park, admission is $10 for spectators and free for Westchester residents. If you just want to ride a few rides, you can grab a fun card at $1 per point. Season passes to Playland cost $95 to get on the rides and $35 for spectators; Westchester residents get a $15 discount.
