Rivertowns College Roundup – Feb. 11-17

• SPOTLIGHT ON: AUDRA FOX OF ARDSLEY AND NEW YORK UNIVERSITY - Audra Fox's national standing in fencing rose in the U.S. Junior Olympics National Championships, held in Baltimore this weekend, as she placed fifteenth out of 148 foil wielders, having four victories in the first round, seven person competition. She then won three bouts in the direct elimination round, advancing to the final 16. Fox leads the Violets in victories this season with a 51-19 record.

• Teammate Jess Sherman of Irvington has a 6-21 record on epee, while another former Ardsley fencer Ilana Regenbogen, has a foil record of 8-1 this season at Duke.

• At the M.A.A.C. Indoor Track and Field Championship at the N.Y. Armory on Feb. 15, Manhattan College’s ladies team finished third with 122.50 points. Sarah Moore of Irvington finished third in the pole vault, with her best vault 10-04 meters, while she was eighth in the triple jump, as her longest distance was 34-01.50 meters.

• In the first match of the Spring season on the 15th, the St. Olaf's of Minnesota men's tennis team lost to UW-Lacrosse, 6-3, as Andy Catania of Dobbs Ferry won his singles match 6-2,6-0. He and his doubles partner also prevailed 8-4. In a 7-2 win at Concordia on the 16th, he won his singles match, 6-3,6-4 and then in the doubles set to they lost a fiercely played match, 9-8.

• In their final game of the season, the Connecticut College Camels defeated Colby in a tussle at Tufts on Feb. 13, a 61-58 nail biting win. Cara Gabelman scored four points on two layups, tied for game high with six rebounds, had two assists, two steals and four turnovers in the game. The season record was 10-13/4-6.

• At the Shaw University of Raleigh, N.C. Softball Challenge held from on Feb. 15 through Feb. 17, Yolanda Jones of Hastings and the Virginia University of Lynchburg launched their softball season in a game with Concord University of Athens, West Virginia, at Raleigh's Walnut Creek High School on Feb. 15. With Jones in right field they were shut out 20-0. Later that day, with Alderson-Broaddus as the foe, they were shut out 8-0, on a no hitter by the other squad's pitcher, with Jones fanning once and having one put out in the game.

• In a 69-63 loss at Clarkson on Feb. 12, Kevin Dahill of Dobbs Ferry and Skidmore drained two of three trey attempts for six points, while hosting Vassar on Feb. 15, in the final home game for the Skidmore Thoroughbreds, they topped Vassar 67-56 as Kevin Dahill of Dobbs Ferry had four points on two layups, plus one board and one assist in the win and had one rebound, one assist, two turnovers, and one steal on the night. In the finale at R.P.I. they dropped a 73-66 game to the Engineers, as Dahill had one field goal, two boards, two assists, and two turnovers in the game. The record for the season was 15-9/9-6.

• Lisa Bucci of Irvington and Salve Regina had one assist and one turn over in their 63-47 win at Nichols on Feb. 12, while at Gordon on Feb. 14, she had five points on a bucket and a trey, plus having one rebound and one steal in the 60-39 win. At home with Roger Williams in the season finale on Feb. 16, she had one layup and one rebound in the 58-48 setback with the record 15-10/12-6.

• In a 94-80 win over hosts Fredonia on Feb. 15, Ryan Riefenhauser of Dobbs Ferry and Geneseo scored 10 points on 4-7 and 2-3, plus having one assists, two turnovers, and one steal on the night, while in the season finale at home with Buffalo State on Feb. 16, he had one of his most productive games as a Blue Knight, with 12 points, game highs of 10 boards and five steals, plus two assists and two turnovers, in the 83-67 win over Buffalo State.

• In a wrestling meet at the New York Athletic Club on Feb. 15, the Columbia Lions' team defeated the Princeton Tigers, 30-7, with Penn Gottfried of Ardsley winning his 125 bout by a decision, 11-5. Hosting Penn on the 16th, he dropped his match, 17-5, as the Quakers prevailed, 23-9.

• At the N.E.W.A.K. swimming championship on the 15th, Cara Morris of Irvington and her 200 Freeestyle Relay foursome finished third with a time of 1:38.81,while in the 50 Freestyle preliminary heats, she was 11th, in 25.04. On Feb. 16, she was sixteenth in the 100 Butterfly, clocked 1:00.14, her foursome was fourth in the 200 Medley Relay, with a time o f 1:49.53, and she was fourteenth in the 100 Butterfly, at 1:00.18. On Feb. 17, Morris was 12th in the 100 Freestyle, at 54.25, and her 400 Freestyle Relay quartet were 9th, clocked at 3:54.32.

• At Rochester on the 16th, Michael Kennelly of Irvington and Oneonta, was the sole winner in the tennis tussle with the Yellow Jackets, as he copped a hard fought singles match, 3-6,6-2, 6-3. It was the opening match of the Spring Season for the Red Dragons.
