
Laura Curran, the current president of the Baldwin School Board, will now represent that area as well as a portion of Rockville Centre in Mineola as she emerged victorious on Tuesday.
Curran, a Democrat, received 6,996 votes, or 57.01 percent, to Republican opponent Debra Pugliese’s 5,268 votes, or 42.93 percent.
The fifth district, currently represented by outgoing Legislator Joseph Scannell, will change under the Republicans’ redistricting plan. Most of Rockville Centre is now in the seventh district, represented by Howard Kopel, who won reelection.

Curran, a former news reporter, will represent the northeast portion of the village.
