Minimal Outages Reported So Far Across L.I. From Elsa: PSEG

The utility was criticized for its response to last year's tropical storm.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY — The pressure was on PSEGLI to perform effectively in Tropical Storm Elsa.

Despite the whipping winds and pounding rain overnight, the power company handled the severe weather to this point.

Serving more than 1.1 million customers Long Island-wide, but as of 11 a.m more than 9,000 customers were without power, PSEGLI said on its website.

They said crews are working to restore the remaining outages safely and as quickly as possible and will continue to work throughout the day and night.

As of 6 a.m., PSEGLI got the lights back on to more than 9,700 customers since noon Thursday, they said.

While the utility works to restore power, they are also working to restore trust across the island.

PSEGLI came under fire for its poor response to Tropical Storm Isaias last August that led to long stretches of outages and criticism for its customer service response.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced at the time that the Long Island Power Authority was suing PSEGLI for $70 million in damages as they failed "to adequately oversee outage management and communications systems."

For Elsa, though, they have more than 2,500 line workers, tree trimmers and other personnel actively assisting in any restoration efforts, the utility company said.
