Edward Oppenheimer, Lifelong RVC Public Servant, Dies

Oppenheimer was always working to make the lives of his fellow residents better.

Edward Oppenheimer, a dedicated public servant of the Village of Rockville Centre, died on Thursday. He was 66.

Oppenheimer spent his life serving and helping the residents of Rockville Centre. In 1979, he joined the Rockville Centre Fire Department's Floodlight Rescue Company No. 1. He volunteered as an EMT and firefighter for 40 years.

His professional career was spent as an accountant, helping village residents keep their finances in order. But while working, he also served as one of the first Nassau County legislators, was a trustee and president of the Rockville Centre Public Library, was one of the founding trustees of the Rockville Centre Community Fund, served on the Village Planning Board, was chair of the Traffic and Transportation and Citizens Finance committees, was a trustee of the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce and of Congregation B'nai Sholom-Beth David.

In June 2009, Oppenheimer was elected to the Rockville Centre Village Board of Trustees, and served until July 1 of this year, when he retired. During his time on the board, he served as liaison to the comptroller's office, the Finance Committee, Housing Authority, Citizens Budget Advisory Committee, Chamber of Commerce, Economic Opportunity Counsel, Confide, Traffic and Transportation, Information Technology, People and Communications, Civic Associations and the Museum and Historical Committee.

In 2017, Oppenheimer underwent treatment and surgery for cancer in his mouth. Throughout it, he never stopped working as an EMT and serving the people of Rockville Centre.

According to the Rockville Centre Herald, Oppenheimer is survived by his wife Ethel, his daughter Sarah (Brad Biel), his son Andrew and his grandson Sean.
