Lawmakers Seek Safety Bill For Deadly Stretch Of Southern State

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY — The Southern State Parkway has earned the nickname "Blood Alley" as one of the most dangerous highways in the country. Legislation in Albany would designate a portion of the parkway as a "Highway Safety Corridor."

It would allow increased educational signage, added enforcement and increased penalties.

"Blood Alley" is a 10-mile stretch in Nassau County from exit 17 in Malverne to exit 32 in South Farmingdale, the Long Island Contractors' Association said. The most concerning issues for drivers are sudden sharp turns, poor lighting and twists in the road.

Earlier this month, a 55-year old man was the latest fatality on the infamous span.

The Long Island Contractors' Association is announcing its support of the "S.O.S Safety on Southern State" bill, co-sponsored by state Senator John Brooks and Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages.
