LI HS Finalist Teams Vying in NSPC Health Science Competition

May 17, 2019, Rockville Centre, NY– The first and only STEM/health science competition in the U.S., the NSPC Health Science Competition, will take place on Thursday, May 30 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Tilles Center at LIU Post, 720 Northern Boulevard in Greenvale, NY 11548. This unique event will include over 300 students representing more than 200 finalist teams from 38 Long Island high schools across Nassau and Suffolk Counties competing for over $80,000 in awards. This groundbreaking competition is seeking judges with experience in health science and medical research to inspire and meet with the best, brightest youth teams in our region who will showcase and present their self-designed projects addressing and solving health-related challenges using science-based research. Sponsored by Neurological Surgery, P.C., one of the New York Metropolitan region’s premier neurosurgical groups, the competition is designed to promote student interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and healthcare careers. The program is managed by the Long Island-based not-for-profit Center for Science, Teaching & Learning (CSTL), whose mission is to encourage science-based learning and literacy through hands-on programs.

“We are at a critical point in time as more healthcare and health science positions remain unfilled across the New York Region and the nation. Today, there are simply not enough qualified individuals available to fill these positions. The NSPC Health Science Competition was created to inspire young people to develop and use their skills to address health-related challenges. Using science, research and innovation, they are creating projects that will be presented in May. As medical professionals, we see this competition as our way of generating interest and motivating young people to pursue health science careers,” said Dr. Michael Brisman of Neurological Surgery, P.C.

As competitors, students worked independently or as part of a team to create their projects. They will showcase their innovations and present to judges during the day-long competition, of which NYU Winthrop Hospital is a supporting sponsor.
