Oceanside's New Costco Set To Open Aug. 23

Oceanside is finally getting their Costco. The wholesale shopping club that has been in the works since 2014 is set to open on Aug. 23, 2017, and everyone from staff to community members is excited.

With hundreds of locations worldwide, what makes Oceanside's new Costco different? The people. General Manager Rob Coope tells Patch a bit about his experience working for the wholesale shopping club and how he's aiming to make this store a success.

Patch: How long have you been doing business in town?

Coope: Price Club opened in 1987 in Nesconset, NY, and our brand new Oceanside location will be the eighth Costco on Long Island and the nineteenth in the state.

Patch: What attracted you to the business you’re in, and how did you get started?

Coope: I always loved to shop at Price Club. It just seemed like a great place to work. I took a summer job and never left.

Patch: If you had to sum up your business mission to a stranger in five words, what would those words be?

Coope: To continually provide our members with quality goods and services at the lowest possible prices. If I had to stick to 5 words: CONSISTENT, LOW (PRICES), QUALITY, and MERCHANDISE.

Patch: What’s the biggest challenge or most difficult moment you’ve faced in your job?

Coope: The most difficult, although rewarding, challenge is teaching our culture to the new employees. Costco employees learn through experience. As a manager, it requires a great deal of patience and teaching. However, when you see an employee "get it," it's extremely rewarding.

Patch: What’s the most satisfying part of your job?

Coope: Without a doubt the most satisfying part of the business is watching an employee work hard, learn our business, and rise through the promotional ranks. Being a witness to the "job" turning into a career.

Patch: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given when it comes to success?

Coope: If the work was easy, anyone could do it. Embrace the challenge knowing that you are willing and capable when many are not.

Patch: What would you say are a few secrets to your success?

Coope: Show up, try hard and take care of the people around you.

Patch: What is your favorite thing about the Patch?

Coope: It is a great voice to the local community.
