More than 2,000 family and friends packed the Mack Sports Complex at Hofstra University on Friday to see Class of 2012 graduate and receive their diplomas.
Here's a brief list of student honors and awards given out during the ceremony:
- Dr. Richard S. Byers School and Community Service Award — Carly Roman
- Laurel Award for Boys — Nicholas Suss
- Laurel Award for Girls — Kasey Ng
- Centennial Award for School and Community — Zachary Derkatch
Salutatorian Carly Roman's speech centered around gratitude — to family, teachers and friends — and she gave her fellow graduates the same advice her mother gave to her as a kid. "Good luck, it's been great and live in the light," she said.

Valedictorian Emily Passarelli expressed that graduation wasn't the ending, but the beginning of a life-long journey. "Never stop dreaming in your heart and always believe in yourself," she said.
