Town Of Hempstead Extends Beach, Pool Hours During Heat Wave

EAST MEADOW, NY — The Town of Hempstead is doing its part to combat the oppressive heat. With heat advisories in place through Wednesday, beaches and pools are extending hours.

The town is also opening several cooling centers as heat indices are expected to top 90 degrees, and could even feel like 100 degrees at times.

"The combination of high temperatures and excessive humidity is a bad combination, and we want our residents to have extra options to cool down at a town pool or beach, or at a cooling center during the hottest parts of the day," Town of Hempstead Supervisor Donald Clavin said.

At Town of Hempstead pools, they will be opened for an extra hour, until 8 p.m.

Lifeguards at town beaches, including Town Park Point Lookout, Lido Beach Town Park, Lido West Town Park and Hewlett Point Park Bay Beach, will be extended by an hour, to 7 p.m.

Among the cooling centers available through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. are:

• Baldwin Senior Center (1810 N. Grand Avenue, Baldwin)
• Bellmore Senior Center (2000 Bellmore Avenue, Bellmore)
• Franklin Square Senior Center (1182 Martha Place, Franklin Square)
• Green Acres Senior Center (400 Flower Road, Valley Stream)
• Wantagh Senior Center (1150 Seamans Neck Road, Wantagh)

Clavin is urging residents to follow some basic precautions including, stay indoor as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun when outside, wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water even if they're not thirsty.
