Woman Fatally Struck By Garbage Truck in Wantagh

The woman was walking when she was hit and killed by the truck on Thursday morning, police say.

WANTAGH, NY — A woman was struck and killed by a garbage truck on Thursday, Nassau police said. The woman was hit at 9:43 a.m. while walking on Wantagh Avenue at Laurel Lane, police said.

The Nassau Police Department's Homicide Squad has not identified the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the crash did not appear to be criminal, but the investigation is ongoing.

Will Flower, a spokesman for Winters Brothers Waste Systems, the company that owned the truck involved in the fatal accident, called it a "terrible tragedy."

"Thoughts and prayers are extended to the victim's family," Flower told Patch.

He said the company is "obviously, fully cooperating with authorities in the investigation."
