Suspect In Custody For Binghamton Student Death: UPDATE

The victim was a graduate of Blind Brook High School in Rye Brook.

BINGHAMTON, NY — A suspect is in custody in the stabbing death of Blind Brook graduate Joao Souza, 19. Officials have not released the suspect's name but they did confirm he is a Binghamton University student.

Souza, a first-year engineering student at Binghamton University, was stabbed and killed Sunday night in what police said was not a random act, pressconnects.com said.

Broome County District Attorney Steven Cornwall said the suspect is being held on campus.

RYE BROOK, NY — Police are still searching for the person suspected of stabbing a Binghamton University student to death Sunday. Joao Souza, 19, was a graduate of Blind Brook High School in Rye Brook, lohud.com said.

Souza was a first-year engineering student at the SUNY school. He was killed around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police said the suspect is still at large.

He was described as a light-skinned male wearing dark pants and a dark Puma hooded sweatshirt. Anyone with information is asked to call the Binghamton University Police at 607-777-2393.

Souza’s family lives in Brazil and were contacted by university officials, pressconnects.com.

University police officials said the New York State Police, the Broome County District Attorney’s and Broome County Sheriff’s offices are assisting the university in the search efforts.

Investigators have not verified that the suspect is a student at the university.

The university said that multiple law enforcement agencies have interviewed numerous people regarding the stabbing and have said that this does not appear to be a random act.

This was the second homicide this year involving a Binghamton University student.
