Encouraging Children To Explore At The Westchester Children's Museum

Children can explore science, art, crafts, building and animation during a day of play at the Rye museum.

RYE, NY—Curiosity is a good thing, especially in kids. Curiosity can motivate kids to learn both practical and creative skills, discover the world and possibly even improve it. To help encourage curiosity, The Westchester Children's Museum is planning an Explore-athon, an interactive day of play, experimentation and discovery, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 21.

Families are invited to discover “Exploration Stations” winding through the current exhibits in the Boardwalk Galleries of the Museum and behind the scenes into the as-yet undeveloped behind-the-scenes space of the Museum’s historic landmark site.

Explore-a-thon combines original activities developed by museum educators and programs developed in partnership with local arts and science organizations and experts featuring:

  • Deconstruction Workshop (take apart everyday electronics and see what’s inside)
  • Mini-golf hole in one challenge
  • Architecture and Engineering challenges
  • Word collages with artist Michael Albert
  • Magnet science
  • Nature-based activities with specialists from Edith G. Read Wildlife Sanctuary

There will be animation workshops with Blue Sky Studios, the studio that created the "Ice Age" movies and the upcoming release "Ferdinand." The workshops are designed for ages 7+. Workshops are offered at 10:30, 11:30, 1:30, 2:30, but space is limited.

Kids can also learn about storms during weather safety workshops with the experts from NBC4 StormTeam, with the Storm Tracker truck available for photos. They can also check out an interactive exhibit with the Orthopedists Team at NYP Lawrence Hospital.

In between exhibits families can snack on brick oven pizza from Abeetz and homemade ice cream from Longford’s

The all-day event is free with Museum admission ($7 each, free for age 1 and under). The museum is located at 100 Playland Parkway, Rye and the entrance is on the boardwalk.
