Former Rye City Mayor John Carey Dies At 95

Flags around the city and at some county-owned properties will be lowered in Carey's honor.

RYE, NY — Former City of Rye Mayor John Carey died at 95. The former judge and U.N. mediator died Oct. 7, according to MyRye.com.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said he was saddened to hear of Carey's passing.

"John lived a long life of dedication to public service, good governance and to the place that we both called home," he said in a statement.

"The City of Rye has decided to lower their flags in John’s memory, and in the spirit of partnership with our local governments the county will do the same," Latimer said.

To honor Carey's commitment to the people he served, Latimer said the flags will be lowered at Playland, Edith Reid Sanctuary, the Marshlands Conservancy and the Blind Brook Sewer Treatment Plant.

"John came before me on the Rye City Council and was an outstanding mayor, but through it all he always stayed true to his mission to honorably serve in public office. He will be missed,” Latimer said.
