Memorial Service Scheduled for Katherine Chappell of Rye, Victim of Lion Attack
Chappell, 29, was killed Monday while on safari in South Africa when she was mauled by a lion.

The family of Katherine Chappell, the former Rye resident killed by a lion Monday in South Africa, will receive friends during a wake for their daughter Friday and Saturday at the Graham Funeral Home on the Boston Post Road in Rye.
Calling hours are scheduled for 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, according to the funeral home. A memorial service will immediately follow Saturday’s calling hours.
Chappell grew up in Rye but had moved to Canada to work in the entertainment industry. She was a visual effects editor for Scanline VFX and worked on the popular HBO series “Game of Thrones,” for which she shared in an Emmy Award, among other projects. She was in South Africa to work for two weeks as a volunteer at a preserve dedicated to saving rhinoceroses and elephants.

She is survived by her parents, Mary and Jonathan Chappell; sisters, Jennifer Ringwald and Lauren; her brother, Ryan; and brother-in-law, Steve Ringwald.
