New Ride Set To Debut At Rye Playland

RYE, NY – For the first time in more than a decade, Playland is welcoming a new ride to the park. Westchester County Executive George Latimer unveiled the new ride Thursday.

The new ride, which will be named by the people of Westchester, is a “Disk'O 24” manufactured by Zamperla — an industry leader and the largest ride manufacturer in the world.

“This is a special day, it is the first time in over a decade that Playland can boast a new ride," Latimer said. "This ride comes from the best of the best in amusement park attractions and we are very happy to work with them.”

While the ride is called “Disk'O 24” by the manufacturer, the people of Westchester County will get to name this ride. The county is asking the public to email all name ideas. Submissions will be accepted until July 1. From the names submitted, a Westchester County camp group will select the winning name.

“Now is your chance to be creative,” said Latimer, “any and all submissions will be considered. This is our ride, it belongs to the whole county, and there is no better way to welcome the first new ride in 11 years than to have the people of the county name it.”

The county’s “Disk'O 24” will be adorned with Playland’s favorite dragon “Coaster” who will spin along with riders from the center of the ride.

The ride arrived in three shipping containers from Italy and is currently being assembled in the Park. The opening date has not been set, but park officials anticipate it will be ready to ride sometime in July.

Zamperla is constructing the ride with several workers as well as with assistance from Playland staff. The construction consists of using a crane to lift and securely place the ride pieces. The ride is secured to a new concrete pad. A queue line and handicap accessible ramp will also be added. Further, Zamperla will train Playland staff on maintaining and operating the ride.

The ride will be inspected by the New York State Department of Labor to receive a permit to operate. Like all rides at Playland, this ride will be inspected daily before it opens for riders.

According to officials, the “Disk'O 24” is designed with a back restraint which leaves both arms and legs free to move as riders are spun around and travel along a “U” shaped track. The ride is part roller coaster and part spinning ride.
