Rye Golf Club to Celebrate 50th Anniversary Beginning April 26

Rye Golf Club will host a season-long celebration commemorating the club’s 50th Anniversary, beginning with a kickoff event April 26 at the club’s annual Opening Day Scramble, officials announced.

The April 26 event is expected to attract more than 100 club members. It will begin with a lavish breakfast buffet at 8:00 a.m., followed by a ceremony featuring former and current City of Rye officials and Rye Golf Club commissioners at 8:45 a.m. An honorary 50th Anniversary ribbon cutting and dedication will take place at 9:00 a.m. just before the prompt start to the shotgun-style scramble. The club will also recognize esteemed long-standing members and employees for their dedication and service to the members of Rye Golf Club throughout the years.

According to club officials, Rye Country Club, or Rye Golf Club as it is known today, was originally founded in 1921, and was later sold and renamed the Rye Wood Country Club. In 1965, the City of Rye paid $1.8 million for the property known for its classic Deveroux Emmet 18-hole golf course–with stunning views of the Long Island Sound–and its picturesque gothic-style Whitby Castle, which was built in 1852 and contains stones from the famed Whitby Abbey in England, the inspiration for its design and name.

Rye Golf Club now features a full aquatics center with a heated Olympic sized swimming pool, separate children’s pool and playground area. Whitby Castle is now open for member and public dining in addition to privately catered events and weddings.

Throughout 2015, Rye Golf Club will celebrate its 50th anniversary in a variety of special ways including commemorative golf tournaments, pool parties and special evening events at Whitby Castle.
