Steer For Student Athletes hosts 2015 Annual Holiday Dinner with Keynote Speaker Lloyd Campbell

Rye Brook, NY-December 17, 2015 Steer For Student Athletes (www.steerforstudentathletes.org), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing funding and services to at-risk student athletes to achieve better personal development, educational, and athletic outcomes, held its 3rd Annual Holiday Dinner at the Hilton Westchester in Rye Brook, NY. The event boasted over 100 attendees including staff, board members, founding and potential donors, friends of the organization, and Steer’s 21 student athletes and their families. The evening was hosted by Steer Coordinator, Byron Womack, and co-chairman Mike Eck.

The event featured Keynote Speaker Lloyd Campbell, who is currently a Consultant for the global executive search firm, Spencer Stuart. Mr. Campbell has spent over 20 years giving talks to a wide range of audiences including students, corporate board members, and inmates. Mr. Campbell’s keynote speech focused on overcoming obstacles, and the ability to sacrifice what it takes to achieve desired goals. Campbell’s uncle, Harry A. Sheppard, served in World War II as a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces. Campbell shared a video detailing the group’s impressive record despite facing frequent and threatening resistance to their presence in the formerly all-white Army Air Corps.

Campbell combined his message of reaching one’s goals while stressing the importance of giving back. “It is not about what you are, but who you are,” Campbell stated. His version of success is not solely based upon individual accomplishments but rather making a difference in other peoples lives. Paired with this sentiment, Campbell challenged this generation of Steer students to pay it forward. He urged that after their high school graduation they make sure to give back and mentor the next generation of Steer students.

Steer For Student Athletes is in its 3rd school year of operation since its inception. There are 21 students in the Steer program ranging from Grades 8-12, and the organization currently operates in three schools and school districts: Port Chester High School (Port Chester-Rye Union Free School District), Palisade Preparatory School (Yonkers Public School District) and Urban Assembly School for Careers in Sports (New York City Public School District).

The primary mission of Steer is to continue to grow and support at-risk student athletes and their families to achieve sustainable positive outcomes. Steer has recently launched a Fundraising Campaign to have 100 student athletes in the program by 2020. Please visit the 100 by 2020 Campaign Page: www.SteerForStudentAthletes.org/100by2020 to learn more on how best to support this campaign and its mission.
