The Cap to Host ‘The Complete Last Waltz’

The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester will host a recreation of The Band's legendary "farewell concert" from 1976.

This November, dozens of some of the country’s most talented musicians will come together to honor The Band and their legendary Last Waltz performance given at San Francisco’s now closed Winterland Ballroom venue in 1976.

Marco Benevento, Sam Cohen, Joe Russo, Cass McCombs, Binky Griptite, Ryan Bingham, The Antibalas Horns, Nicole Atkins, Matt Vasquez, Richard Swift, Eric D. Johnson, Andy Cabic, Alecia Chakour, Jeff Chimenti and many other special guests are a few of the performers scheduled to take part in the concert, scheduled for Thanksgiving Eve, Nov. 27 at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $40 to $95.

The 1976 performance is well-known thanks to a Martin Scorsese documentary released in 1978 on the concert and The Band that is widely considered one of the best concert films ever made.

The Warfield Theater in San Francisco held the same event last year and its producers have launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to produce a video of that event. The kickstarter campaign explains that unlike Scorsese’s documentary The Last Waltz, their Complete Last Waltz film will show every performance of the three-and-a-half-hour 2012 show, plus bonus footage. The campaign offers tickets to the Cap, a download of last year’s show and a pro-shot video among the rewards for contributors. Check it out here

The Band was a Canadian-American rock group that started with Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel and Robbie Robertson. They had originated as  members of rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins’ backing group, The Hawks. After moving on from Hawkins, they were hired by Bob Dylan for his U.S. tour in 1965 and spent a few years recording and performing with Dylan until they officially became The Band in 1968. Ten years after the 1976 “farewell performance” at Winterland they started touring again without guitarist Robbie Robertson. Read more on The Band here.
