1 Killed, 2 Seriously Injured In Head-On Long Island Crash

The driver of a high-end sports car was killed in the crash after crossing into oncoming traffic, police say.

MOUNT SINAI, NY — A man was killed and two others were seriously injured in a head-on crash on Long Island Tuesday evening.

According to Suffolk police, 33-year-old Charles Dassaro was driving a 2017 McLaren 570 east on Route 25A, near West Gate Drive, when he lost control of the sports car, crossed into the westbound lanes and crashed head-on into a 2019 Jeep Wrangler at about 6:25 p.m.

Dassaro, of Rocky Point, was pronounced dead at the scene. A front seat passenger in the McLaren, Augusto Fernandez, 35, of Port Jefferson Station, was transported via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Jeep, Christopher Caputo, 20, of Mount Sinai, was taken via ambulance to Stony Brook with serious injuries.

Two passengers in the Jeep, Nick Torres, 21, of Mount Sinai, and James Snider, 20, of Mount Sinai, suffered minor injuries.
