HOLTSVILLE, NY — Despite winter weather that canceled Holtsville Hal's virtual Groundhog Day ceremony, a prediction was made: early spring. The Brookhaven Town mascot woke up Tuesday morning and emerged from a snowy burrow and did not see his shadow.

Tradition holds that when a groundhog sees its shadow on Feb. 2, there will six more weeks of winter.

Malverne Mel also didn't see his shadow Tuesday.
