Gusting Winds, 'Near Blizzard Conditions' Expected This Weekend in Sachem

Dangerous winds could down power lines and tree limbs, snow to hit eastern Long Island the hardest.

Long Island is in for another icy blast of snow and winds this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Friday’s frigid winds will be followed by a snowstorm Saturday, prompting officials to release a winter storm watch for Saturday afternoon into Sunday afternoon for eastern Long Island.

This weekend’s storm is expected to bring strong winds, low visibility, and blowing snow that will cause “near blizzard conditions” across the island, according to NWS.

Light snow will begin to fall by Saturday afternoon and will become heavier at times throughout Sunday night and into Sunday morning, officials said.

The East End is expected to bear the brunt of the storm, which should taper off by Sunday afternoon, but not before leaving 4 to 8 inches of snow on the ground.

Snowfall totals will decrease further west. Western Suffolk can expect to see 2 to 4 inches of snow overnight while 1 to 3 inches will fall on Nassau, NWS said.

Officials are advising against any kind of travel because of winds with gusts up to 60 mph in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Winds may be powerful enough to bring down power lines and tree limbs and prompted officials to issue a high wind watch for all of Long Island.
