A coastal flood warning will be in effect Sunday for a large portion of the South Shore on Long Island as a low pressure system off the South Carolina coast tracks toward the region.

The flood warning starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. for southern Nassau County and southwestern Suffolk County.

"There is an elevated threat of property damage," the flood warning says. "Widespread flooding of vulnerable areas is expected near the waterfront and shoreline. Expect 1-3 feet of inundation above ground level in low lying, vulnerable areas. This will result in numerous road closures and cause widespread flooding of low lying property including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes and businesses with basements near the waterfront."

The combination of elevated water levels and high surf along the ocean beachfront should also result in significant beach erosion and localized splashovers around the times of high tide, the National Weather Service says.

Flooding will also be possible on the North Shore, where a coastal flood advisory will be in effect from noon until 4 p.m. Sunday.
